The Pitt Rivers stiletto is a very close reproduction of a mid 17thC North Italian dagger in the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford. This beautiful dagger is styled very typically and has a blade designed purely for thrusting as the original had and comes with a double layer naturally tanned leather sheath with a latten (brass) chape.
The stiletto developed in the late 16thC and by the 17thC, widespread across Italy, Spain and Portugal and to a lesser extent the rest of Europe.
Never a weapon of war, but a civilian dagger either as defence or more popularly considered for offence. Small, delicate looking, always fancy and above all lethal. Because of their ability to be stunning ‘Man jewellery’ combined with all their other attributes they were often sported by the moneyed rough and tumble set.
Because of their thin and small size they were named stiletto; a small pen.
(Please note the stiletto only comes as semi sharp)
Please note the blade is fully hardened spring steel and can be sharpened by the customer if required, but Tod Cutler does not offer a sharpening service for this piece.
